Gardening

Each year first and second years (although some senior classes sometimes also) do study visits to different areas of the school grounds in order to study the seasonal cycles of plant and animal life.

The magnificent trees and huge grounds afford opportunities for study under different disciplines:

  • Plant botany-Pollination, seed dispersal, growth cycles, and decomposition.
  • Geography-Provenance of trees and shrubs in the grounds.
  • History-Trees as a link with past and future, their folklore. Medicinal and culinary uses.
  • English-Poetic or prosaic descriptions of the seasons, backed up by the scenery around the school.
  • French-Use of elementary words and conversation
  • Practical Horticulture-Bulb, flower and vegetable planting and cultivation.
  • With small groups released from class.
  • General maintenance of the three school garden areas that we visit with classes.
